Uneven rooms and climbing bills are clues. Here are the telltale signs your attic insulation is falling short.
Climbing or Unpredictable Energy Bills
One of the clearest signals is your utility bill. If heating and cooling costs are creeping up without a change in your habits or rates, heat is likely escaping through an under-insulated attic and forcing your HVAC to work overtime.
Bills that spike in the coldest and hottest months especially point to insulation that isn't holding the line.
Uneven Temperatures Room to Room
Rooms that are always too hot in summer or too cold in winter — particularly upstairs rooms directly under the attic — are a telltale sign. Good insulation keeps temperatures even; poor insulation lets each room drift with the outside weather.
If you find yourself constantly adjusting the thermostat or closing vents to balance the house, insulation is a likely cause.
Drafts, Cold Spots, and an Overworked HVAC
Drafts and cold spots near ceilings and walls suggest air is leaking through gaps the insulation should be backing up. An HVAC system that seems to run constantly is another red flag — it's trying to make up for heat slipping away.
These symptoms often point to a combination of thin insulation and unsealed air leaks, which work together to drain comfort and money.
What You See in the Attic
If you can safely look, the attic itself tells the story: insulation that's thin, flattened, unevenly spread, or visibly old. Signs of pests, droppings, or moisture mean the insulation may be contaminated and underperforming.
Any of these signs is a reason to have your attic inspected. Measuring the current R-value confirms whether an upgrade is worth it — and it usually is.
